A
key focus area for the M&C Specialties Transportation Business Unit
is Fascia. This success story focuses on the fine line tapes used for
paint masking. M&C is currently active with key fascia manufacturers
around the world. M&C can convert many difficult shapes and sizes
to simplify and add high quality to the masking and paint process. In
addition, fine line die cuts improve the process, sometimes reducing the
masking process time by half. Improvements in the process can easily be
met with M&C die cuts, and once implemented in the process, fascia
manufacturers can benefit from increased savings due to added efficiency
on the masking line.
The current process
involved each technician using fine line tape in roll goods slit to different
lengths. Each technician would cut and trim by hand fine line tape off
the rolls. This wasted a lot of time and material. We believed that if
they switched to die cuts we could reduce their process time by 3-4 minutes,
which means a lot in production dollars.
We worked closely
with Process Improvement Engineers. Once supplied with sample fascia components,
CAD drawings and templates we could begin shaping several different die
cuts which would become a multiple step process.
Over months of prototyping
various shapes and reworking several design changes M&C was able to
present 6 final die cut parts for the front door; 1 of those parts requires
a mirror image for satisfying both left and right door panels. On the
rear door panel we have 6 final die cuts; 2 of those parts requires a
mirror image.
